Namma Bengalooru, Namma Hemme?
Translated...the title means "Our Bangalore, our Pride"?
No, I am not going to talk about the pathetic infrastructure of Blore or the umanageable traffic or the increasing crime rates...its about something else.
Last month I had been to Mysore during diwali time and I visited the exhibition that starts during dusshera time in the grounds in front of the palace. When I came out of it...the one thing that I felt was a pride for my mother tongue. Living in the capital city of Kanataka for so many years now, I have never actually felt at home. Nobody speaks to you in Kannada! Even the auto drivers assume I speak Hindi...!
At mysore, I could see people so proud of their language and they do not hesitate to use it. Now, I know why my cousins born and bought up there have so much of an attachment to the language! I know I have never bothered improving my reading skills of Kannada...and now I wish I had tried!
The joy of hearing everyone around you speak your language is something that I never knew existed! Well, you lose out on a lot of things when u decide to settle down in a cosmopoiltan city. I understand that people from different states are around and kannada cant be the only language in use, but what I dont understand is why do kanndigas not use the language with fellow kannadigas! Are we ashamed of our language? Or speaking English is a status symbol of any sorts?
All I can say is that it is quite sad that people here are not attached to their mother tongue....are not proud of using it. Sigh....

Personally, I prefer English over Hindi. After all both are alien languages to a Kannadiga and I am more comfortable with English.
hey...well DER AAYE PAR DURUST AYE...huh?? well frankly hav no qualms speakin in kannada but....u know every1 has his/her OWN preferences..wat say? but wats more disheartnin is the fact tat the language is bein used mostly for JUST OBSENE comments..n ALSO,it APPEARS tat more girls than boys HAVE a TENDENCY to converse in ANGREZI rather than even in their MOTHER TONGUE..leave alone KANNADA...
nyways...the ARGUMENT CONTINUES..
@sooraj: what obscene comments are you referring to? *puzzled*
hey pradyot...sorry kano, nanu yeno bariyoke hogi yeno barde..kannada ettichege bari regsodikke athawa drivergala kiruchata galalli matra kelta iddiwi antha bariyalu hage barde...edu bejarina sangati adare edaralli SATYA ede alwa?
All the bangalore people I know speak english :-( i dont like talking in english.
language is only a medium to express one's thoughts and should not become -my language ,your language. It is always better to learn as many languages as possible .
Also when u are in between many people speaking different languages , it is a good manner to talk in a common language understandable to all . Here if u try to become fanatic about being kannadiga and start of in kannada , u don't show how good a kannadiga u are , but how communal fanatic u are
Ah. As usual the brave anon puts is an undesired appearance. And when you cant get by on reason, go for volume, as is their wont and demonstrated so evidently.
No doubt another of those virulent North Indian fellows settled down south, who for some reason think themselves superior to the Southies, steadfastly refuse to learn the local lingo or integrate with the crowd here and go on carping about how communal or fanatical we are. Never mind that it is the North which is stuck in the middle ages - debating over the mandir and the masjid, over reservations and other such useless issues. If only S. India had been a separate country, we'd have been far ahead - right now it is the northern states dragging us down.
And btw, anon, in case you hadnt noticed, this is Bangalore and it happens to be in KA where Kannada is the local language and is also in the south of India. If you dont like it, get out. And please take 10 trainloads of your undesired brethren with you.
And in case you didnt notice Anon, I commented in a language that is commonly understood. English. A legacy of the Brits that will get me beyond the cow belt that is your homeland. Yes, I prefer the British legacy to the indigenous Hindi. So there
It is interesting how a newcomer here has a completely different perspective.
I generally believe that if a person lives in a place, he should know at the bare minumum, the language, culture and traditions (in descending order) of the place. Coming to Bangalore has only re-enforced that concept simply because of the *need* to know kannada at a variety of locations. There was no place that I went to, where if I could claim that if I conversed in kannada, it wouldn't have helped.
But hey, its been only a month here so I couldn't say. It definitely would suck if the people in your own city refused to speak your language. This would also probably one of the very rare instances that I would know of it :|
Why does Pradyot and co blame others who have settled in b'lore for the lose in sheen of Kannada. Discipline should start from home. Here we have a Kannadiga who is still figuring out how to read her mother tongue. How many of you or your friends really know to read/write/speak Kannada. How many of you in future will make your children learn in Kannada Medium? After all everybody is human and all are equal and one's love of language shouldn't be a medium for pouring vent on others and no doubt mother tounge is something which we keep it close to our heart and is something vouch for but i can never agree it being used as instrument for spreading hate on non-Kannadigas. This is real unbecoming a true Kannadiga.

Hey, glad you liked namma mysoru :)
And sadly b'lore ppl consider it a village (maybe the same reason?). A surprising incident happened today.. the paper boy came to my house for the bill payment, and I kept asking him few clarifications in Kannada he kept answering in English! And my flatmate too falls into the same category. Though being a kannadiga, she speaks to her parents n sister in English!! And sadly I have to converse in English too :(
nice post. Explains why my folks decided to buy a house in Mysore despite spending almost their entire lives in Bangalore.
Do you notice how recurring this theme among blogs written by bangaloreans?
I cribbed about it too , not very long ago

Hey,
Why dont you blog nowadays?
Interesting enough, i am a tamilian, btu actually know and try and speak as much kannada as possible, even if it's broken:-) The other extreme of this problem is that in various 'cosmopolitan' offices today, people break out into conversations and jokes in their respective mother tongues (tamil, telugu et al) leaving some people who are from other parts of the country feeling completely excluded! But, your point is correct and taken!
Cheers!
